Faculty Hiring and Development

- Evaluations: of faculty, staff, curriculum.

- Hiring Temporary Workers: the Personnel Office can advise you on how to proceed – there are special considerations for International students and non-US citizens and you can put their visa status at risk if you do not proceed according to W&L policies.

- Interviewing: what you can and cannot ask; what you should ask any potential employee.

- New Faculty Orientation: department heads should attend to the Guidelines for guiding junior faculty development, the Dean of the College organizes various orientation programs and the Provost provides an orientation session covering University Policies.  New faculty should look over the New Faculty Orientation Guide for helpful hints on how to get started at W&L, and all faculty should refer to the College Guide Book for helpful hints.

- Pre-Tenure Leave Program (Undergraduate): The University has developed an optional leave program to allow a junior faculty member to take release time in order to focus more fully on pedagogical and/or scholarly development.

- Process for Filling Non-academic Positions and Requesting New Non-academic Positions: The Budget Advisory Committee with President Tom Burish developed a procedure for addressing non-academic vacated positions and requests for new non-academic positions, in December 2002. This process will allow the University to assess the needs of the entire community and allow for resources to be allocated according to the University's highest priorities. Outlined below are the steps each department is expected to follow when making their requests.

Process for filling vacant positions and requesting new positions including those identified in the Strategic Initiatives:

  • A request to fill a non-academic vacancy or a request for a new position should be submitted by the department head to the supervising Dean or Vice President.
  • The request submitted by the department head should include a written position description with a list of responsibilities and the specific need for the position
  • The request should address the alternate ways in which the needs could be met and/or any detrimental effects on the department or University if the vacancy were not filled.
  • The Dean or Vice President will forward the request to the Budget Advisory Committee with his/her recommendation and an anticipated salary range.
  • The Committee will review all open positions and recommend to the President whether the requested position should be filled or whether the vacancy should remain in the pool of position requests with a priority established by the Committee.

The Budget Advisory Committee will recommend to President Burish a priority ranking of open position requests. All requests for filling vacated positions and for creating new positions will be evaluated in relation to that list. It is anticipated that the Committee will meet monthly to review new requests and to evaluate the priority rankings.
