Personnel Issues
- Discipline or Termination of any Employee: You are not alone! For advice about possible disciplinary matters consult with the Dean of the College or the Director of Personnel long before a crisis emerges, or view the policies discussed in the Faculty Handbook.
- Floating Holidays: The Personnel handbook explains this tricky territory, non-faculty staff members have some flexibility in how they take certain days off throughout the year. As supervisors, department heads need to understand what they can and cannot require of their staff members.
- Hiring Temporary Workers: the Personnel Office can advise you on how to proceed – there are special considerations for International students and non-US citizens and you can put their visa status at risk if you do not proceed according to W&L policies. - New Employee Orientation: All new employees must receive an orientation to workplace policies, especially those pertaining to harassment. - Overtime: CAUTION – changing laws governing use of overtime make this a challenging issue for supervisors.
- Personnel Services: Personnel services can help you obtain a copy of the personnel handbook, forms, answers to questions about the supervisor's role, and obtain information regarding employment opportunities, benefits, etc. - Process for Filling Non-academic Positions and Requesting New Non-academic Positions: The Budget Advisory Committee and the President developed a procedure for addressing non-academic vacated positions and requests for new non-academic positions, in December 2002. This process will allow the University to assess the needs of the entire community and allow for resources to be allocated according to the University's highest priorities. Outlined below are the steps each department is expected to follow when making their requests. Process for filling vacant positions and requesting new positions including those identified in the Strategic Initiatives:
The Budget Advisory Committee will recommend to the President a priority ranking of open position requests. All requests for filling vacated positions and for creating new positions will be evaluated in relation to that list. It is anticipated that the Committee will meet monthly to review new requests and to evaluate the priority rankings.
- Student Employees & International Student Issues: Department heads can request that the financial aid office assign their department one or more work study students – the students' salaries are paid from federal funds via the financial aid office; International students have unique paperwork requirements – ALWAYS check with the Personnel office to get the appropriate paperwork filed BEFORE hiring an international student. - Supervising Full-time Staff Members: department heads must be familiar with their supervisory role. - Workers' Compensation: any time an employee is injured at work, it is imperative that the Director of Personnel be notified promptly.
