Chapter 3:  University Computing and Media Services

Faculty Academy

W&L’s University Computing division offers the Faculty Academy – a series of orientation programs offered during the summer as well as throughout the year, designed to familiarize new faculty and staff members with the University’s computing resources. Visit their web site for a complete schedule of training opportunities under the ‘sign in’ link ( http://facultyacademy.wlu.edu).

All sessions are in Leyburn 301 unless otherwise noted. All sessions are open to all faculty and academic staff, unless otherwise noted. Lunch (Leyburn Library Pit, in front of Northern Auditorium) is open to faculty and academic staff who sign up for a session on that day.  Please give at least 24-hour notice for lunch.

The workshops, usually including instruction as well as hands-on practical experience, are organized around a set of themes related to teaching and technology. Check the website for offerings and registration information.

Help Desk

The University Computing Help Desk [x4357 (HELP)], managed by John White (x8844) is available to answer most computing needs on campus. The help desk web site is located at  (http://helpdesk.wlu.edu/ ).

Computer Support

For help with your computer software problems, the computer help desk should be your first line of defense. In addition, each academic department has been assigned a Technology Integration Specialist, who is available to consult on specific computing needs. Ask your department head for the name of your department’s contact person.

University Computing maintains a web site located at

GroupWise

GroupWise is the university’s e-mail software. On campus, you will be able to access GroupWise via the network. Off campus, you may access a web-based version at http://groupwise.wlu.edu

Faculty who are teaching in a non-equipped room may request mobile technology equipment as needed by calling Flash Floyd in the Instructional Technology Lab in Leyburn Library (x 8098). At least 24-hours notice for the deliver of equipment is appreciated. Carole Bailey (x5851), the Classroom Technology Administrator, and John Blackburn (x8651), Head of the Instructional Technology Group, the may also be helpful in addressing related needs.

During class hours, classrooms are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis via the Registrar’s Office.  After class hours check first with the appropriate contact person for the building in question to reserve technology-equipped classrooms (which are locked after hours).
