Chapter 6: Non-Academic Policies and Related Information

Faculty Handbook

The Faculty Handbook is updated and maintained by the University’s Provost. It is available online via the College web site, under the Administration link . The Faculty Handbook describes the employment agreement between the University and all teaching faculty. It contains full descriptions of academic and employment policies under the following headings: The Charter of the University; Administrative Officers; The Faculty; Standing Committees; Undergraduate Classes; The Catalogue; The Governance of Students; Faculty Development Programs; and Conditions of Faculty Employment.   Questions about its contents should be directed to the Dean of the College (x8746) or the Provost (x8700).

FERPA and Confidentiality

Both the University Registrar’s web site, and General Counsel’s web site contain information about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines for determining what student information must be treated as confidential. All faculty are responsible for understanding these guidelines. Additional information about FERPA is contained within the Faculty Handbook and at

Student Disciplinary Policies

The Student Handbook outlines the governance structure for students.  It includes sections on the academic and non-academic policies of the University, the Honor System and the Student Judicial Council, and standards for fraternities and sororities, just to name a few. (More about the Student Judicial System). The Student Handbook is distributed by the Office of the Dean of Students.

University Registrar’s Site

Faculty members will find it helpful to become familiar with the University Registrar’s web site. It contains links to information of use to faculty, and to students. It has links to current course listings and enrollment data, the University’s planning and events calendars, policies, forms, and institutional research and statistics databases. Many academic advisers bookmark the site (or list it among their ‘favorites’ list on their web browser) for easy reference during advising sessions.
