Grants and FellowshipsStudent Exchanges in the United StatesWashington and Lee University participates with Hampden-Sydney, Mary Baldwin, Randolph-Macon, Randolph-Macon Woman’s and Sweet Briar Colleges and Hollins University in a student exchange program. The program is designed primarily for juniors. Additional information and catalogues of the participating colleges are available in the Office of the University Registrar. Washington and Lee also has an exchange agreement with Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Additional information is available from the Office of the University Registrar. Students must have a 2.500 cumulative gradepoint average in order to apply for any exchange program sponsored by the University. Grades received while on an exchange program are included in a student’s Washington and Lee cumulative grade-point average. Exchange Program with Spelman CollegeAn exchange program was created in 2002, linking Washington and Lee University and Spelman College, an historically black college for women in Atlanta. The program is designed to provide motivated students from both institutions with the opportunity to explore unique curricular opportunities, as well as a chance to live and work in a cultural setting that differs from the student's home institution. This program has emerged from numerous discussions among faculty members and administrators at both institutions. We all agree that such a program would permit students from rural Virginia and from urban Atlanta to gain first-hand knowledge of the societal burdens and supports that characterize each unique environment. By participating in this exchange, students may take advantage of unique academic offerings at either institution, and they may benefit from an opportunity to live and study for a full semester in a setting that is as different from Lexington (or Atlanta) as it could be. For more information on these exchange programs, contact the Office of the Dean of the College. For information on study abroad programs, visit the Office of International Education Web site. |
