Boren Fellowship

Washington and Lee junior, Ellie Hanson '09 has been awarded a Boren Fellowship from the National Security Education Program.

The aim of the fellowship is to facilitate research and education in fields promoting U.S. national security. Freshman and sophomores are encouraged to apply for awards that cover expenses during intensive academic programs that foster an awareness of international affairs.

Washington and Lee University senior religion major Liane Carlson '07 has recently been awarded the distinguished Fulbright grant to study in Germany.

Carlson is from a small town in rural New York, where, she says, most everyone is a teacher, policeman, nurse or construction worker. She and her two sisters had other plans. Jenn, the oldest of the sisters is a lawyer, Heather, the second oldest "does something involving computers for Social Security, which I don't wholly understand," said Carlson. The Social Security Administration is a sort of "family business" for the Carlsons, as both her parents work for it as well. Liane is hoping to avoid the "family business" and break the mold with a Ph.D. in religion, with emphasis on the philosophy of religion, after her year abroad. Washington and Lee University European history and German major Richard Kyle '07 has been awarded the distinguished Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to teach English in Germany. His is one of 140 Teaching Fulbrights to Germany awarded this year.

 

Kyle's Fulbright is designed to improve German students' English language skills, as well as to expand their knowledge of the United States. Kyle will be placed within a major city in Germany and will become fully integrated into the host community. Click here to read the story.

 

 

 

 

 

Washington and Lee University classics and German literature major Nadia Prinz '07 has been awarded the distinguished Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to teach English in Germany. Hers is one of 140 Teaching Fulbrights to Germany awarded this year.

"As a Fulbright Teaching Assistant, I will be teaching English in a secondary school, conveying important elements of American culture and history as well as instructing them in the language," said Prinz. It's a role that is not new to her--she has spent many summers teaching children, both in camps and public schools.

Washington and Lee University senior romance language major Emily Sberna '07 has recently been awarded the distinguished Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to teach English in Spain.

Washington and Lee University senior Will Townes has been awarded a 2007 Fulbright grant to study in the Philippines. His was one of only 10 Fulbrights awarded for the Philippines this year.

Townes' interest in biology began early in life due to the hunting and fishing trips he took with his father. Learning to name trees and clean squirrels invoked his interest in biology and anatomy. While he originally planned to become a doctor, he wavered from the plan a bit after he participated in a two-week research project with his high school biology professor in Belize.  Click here to read the story.

Goldwater Scholars

 

 

W&L's Jameson Graber '08, a junior mathematics major, is a recent recipient of a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, recognizing academic success in the fields of mathematics, engineering and the natural sciences.

Graber is one of just 317 students selected to receive the $7,500 academic grant for the 2007-08 academic year. Only faculty may nominate students for the program, whose awards are based on academic merit. About 1,100 students nationally competed for this year's scholarships.  Click here to read the story.

Washington and Lee University junior biology and French major Jenny Schieltz '08 has won an honorable mention in this year's Goldwater Scholarship competition.

Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was designed to encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering, and has become the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

Watson Scholars

 

Ben Long '07 has been awarded the prestigious Thomas J. Watson Fellowship for the 2007-2008 academic year for his project "Bovine Bonanza: The Changing Face of Cattle Farming."

The fellowship is used to fund travel outside of the United States  during the year following graduation. The Thomas J. Watson Foundation describes the fellowship as "an opportunity for a focused and disciplined Wanderjahr of their own devising-- time in which they might explore with thoroughness a particular interest, test their aspirations and abilities, view their lives and American society in greater perspective, and concomitantly, develop a more informed sense of international concern."  Click here to read the story.
 

Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship  
 

Katie Kingsbury '07 has been awarded one of two 2007 Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship.  The Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship is considered the NCAA's most prestigious honor awarded to student athletes.  The award is presented in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and future success in postgraduate studies and planned careers.  The NCAA selects one male and one female recipient each year and awards the winners a $21,500 scholarship for graduate school.

 

 A three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete and two-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Kingsbury currently boasts a 6-1 record in singles and a 3-1 mark in doubles this season. She established a school record for wins in a season by a freshman with 26 (26-8) and captured the ODAC No. 6 Singles title as a freshman and sophomore. Thus far for her career, she has a 64-17 singles record and a 27-8 doubles record.    Click here to read the story.
