Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships

The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships were established by Rotary International, a network of local civic clubs, "to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries." One of these programs (Graduate Scholarships) provides up to $18,000 for academic fees, supplies, and housing, plus round-trip transportation, for one year of graduate study in most fields at a university outside the United States where Rotary clubs are located.

Rotary Scholars are expected to act in the dual role of student and unofficial "ambassador of good will" through appearances before Rotary clubs and other organizations both abroad and back in the United States.

Candidates must be 18-30 years old as of July 15 of the year of application, unless military service has intervened. A bachelor's degree or equivalent must be earned prior to undertaking scholarship responsibilities.

Successful candidates must have maintained high standards in academic studies and show promise of distinguished achievement; must demonstrate qualities of leadership, initiative, enthusiasm, adaptability, maturity, and seriousness of purpose; and must be proficient at the time of application in the language of the country of study.

Rotarians, their immediate relatives, and Rotary employees are not eligible for this program. Initial application is through a local Rotary club in the applicant's district, followed by district and national competition.

Deadline for application: application process should be started about 18 months in advance of planned travel. Check with your local Rotary Club for details.
